Last night, I had the pleasure of attending a Wine Tasting 101 class which was a lot of fun. The class is held every Tuesday at House Wine, which is located at 408 Josephine St. in Austin. It’s located right off of Lamar and Barton Springs.

If you’ve never been to House Wine, it is a very cool wine bar that is located inside an old house. When I first saw it, I wasn’t even sure if it was the right place. I think it’s really cool that they managed to keep the house setting but still have an awesome place to go drink some wine.

The bar has a bunch of different rooms that are all painted different colors and they have couches and chairs all over the place. It reminded me a lot of The Roosevelt in downtown Phoenix. They also have live music and happy hours all the time so it’s worth checking out.

If you want to learn more about the bar, check out their website.

The Class

Like I mentioned above, the main reason I decided on this bar was because I wanted to attend the Wine Tasting 101 class they have every Tuesday. I wasn’t sure what to expect at first and knew I would either love it or hate it. Luckily, the class turned out to be a blast. Best part of all, the price was only 10 bucks and that included some cheese and crackers, as well as the wine samples.

There were people of all ages, some new wine drinkers and others that were far more experienced. I’ve been trying out different wines over the last six months so I felt like I fit right in. The woman that instructed the class was a lot of fun and she made it really easy to understand the different wines and what to look for when buying them yourself.

The class featured 6 samples of wine: 3 white wines and 3 red wines. Although I am not a big fine of white wines, I did end up finding a few that I really enjoyed. As far as the red wines go, my favorite was a Malbec from Argentina. I pretty much fell in love with it as soon as I tried it.

Besides trying the different wines, I also learned a little about what makes certain wines taste the way they do. It was a very interesting hour and I plan on attending it again since the wines change from class to class.

Stay tuned for more reviews and events as I continue to explore Austin and everything it has to offer.

Wow…first a move to Austin. Then a wine-tasting class. You guys are on your way. Love wine myself, especially the big, full-flavored reds. Malbecs can be nice; I also love Red Zinfandels–NOT to be confused with that perversion known as White Zinfandel!

Yeah I am a big fan of the reds as well. I’ve never been much of a white wine drinker, though I really liked the sparkling Prosecco I tried at the class. I’ve only had one red zinfandel and I wasn’t a big fan but I’ll have to give it a try again.
